Pan’s Labyrinth

Guillermo del Toro has created a fantastic imaginary world in El Laberinto del Fauno, released to English speaking audiences as Pan’s Labyrinth. The story follows Ofelia as she goes to live with her mother’s new husband, a Captain in Franco’s Fascist Army in the north of Spain in 1944. Ofelia escapes the world around her into a fantasy world each night. The result is a very dark and brutal fairytale. The initial description may sound like a tempting movie to bring the kids to, but this movie is subtitled from Spanish and rated R for it’s violence. I could go on and on talking about the beauty of the design, and the complex levels of analogies the movie makes not only about life, morals, and virtues, but also of the state of Spain its self. I’m not going to though; I simply want you to go enjoy this masterpiece.
