The Transformers
The very first time I heard they were doing a Transformers movie I was ecstatic, then I heard Michael Bay was directing it and a piece of me died. As time went on I began hearing more and more rumors of what they were doing and more of me died. I hated Michael Bay for what he was doing. Raping my childhood like that. But then came the 4th of July and off I went to see the movie. Hmm, guess I owe Bay an apology. Ah fuck it, I won’t apologize but I will say that I really, really liked this movie.
The story is straight forward and is more about the human characters than the Transformers themselves, but that’s not to say we don’t get any Transformers goodness. We get lots, and I mean a lot. The movie starts with a US military base being attacked in Qatar and in true Michael Bay style it all guns blazing with lots of great action sequences and tons of bullets flying. If there’s one thing Bay knows how to do is blow shit up and he does it perfectly here. It seems the Decepticons are after information the US government has been holding onto for years regarding the whereabouts of the Allspark and Megatron, who crash landed on earth while looking for the cube over 10,000 years ago.
I won’t give away too much of the plot, but we quickly find the human element pick up soon after with Sam Witwicky, played by Shia LaBeouf, unknowingly buying the Autobot Bumblebee as his first car. We’re also introduced into his love interest Mikaela Banes, played by the beautiful Megan Fox, who’s not only hot but a grease monkey to boot. After a little coaxing she quickly turns into Sam’s friend and becomes an integral part of the story. We’re also introduced to Sector 7, the secret government organization that’s been hiding Megatron in the Hoover Dam for the past 80 years. With everything falling into place we’re lead into the final battle which is amazing. In your typical Bay movie, the good guys win and the bad guys get their asses handed to them.
Thankfully, unlike traditional Michael Bay movies the Transformers does focus on character development. Surprisingly there was a large amount of humor spread throughout the film, but it didn’t kill it. I think it actually added to it and made it more comfortable for people that weren’t raised with the Transformers mythos.
Sure there are things to nitpick, but when dealing with such a rich history there always will be. Overall I was pleasantly surprised by this movie and loved it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
